We welcome Shawn Riley from Gulf Coast Camera to present some insight on his methods, the areas where he finds his subjects, and how he captures his photos.
Shawn’s been taking photographs since 1978; he used a borrowed range finder camera for a photography course he took at Jamestown Community College, Jamestown, NY. He was accepted into the Fine Art program of State of New York Fredonia during the 1980’s in the drawing and painting program and kept working in photography which allowed him to study abroad at the Humberside College of Higher Education, Hull College of Art where he started working in medium format film. His eduction was put on hold for a couple decades, but the camera was never put down. He migrated from film to digital in the early days and then into the modern age as he traveled the world with the US Navy. He restarted his education in 2011 at a college in Virginia studying fine art and psychology in the pursuit of an Art Therapy degree.
Twisting and turning roads brought Shawn to the Gulf Coast, all the while with a camera in his hands. He started taking pictures of birds because as he states it, “face it, there is not much for landscape here and I just don’t get on with people as photographic subjects. Also, birds don’t complain about how they look in photos.”
