We welcome Ed Svitill who will enthusiastically present his original photos of the underwater world of Truk, a coral atoll and lagoon 980 miles northeast of New Guinea, in the Caroline Islands. The Truk area is known not only for its marine life but also for its unusual marine wreckage, both ships and aircraft.
The mighty Japanese navy developed Truk as a key naval bastion in the early 1940’s. By early 1944 the tide of war had turned, and the US launched one of the greatest air/sea assaults in history against Truk. Although the major Japanese warships withdrew from the area, the attack sank about 100 vessels and destroyed about 400 aircraft, many of which are also underwater. This region thus has one of the world’s richest troves of underwater attractions.
Ed will also exhibit and demonstrate some of the special equipment used for marine photography.
